The Adopt a Highway Clean Up Program

The Adopt a Highway program originated in the 1980s when an engineer from the Texas DOT saw stuff flying out of bed of the pickup. To have it cleaned up by the city would be quite expensive so he thought of an idea to have local groups clean sections of highway and get a little recognition by posting the groups name on a nearby sign. What James Evans (the Texas engineer) started back then has spread all over the country.

Many people who are conscientious about what our highways and byways look like volunteer some time each year to clean up sections of the highways. It’s an excellent way for nonprofit organizations to band together and serve the community. Adopt A Highway programs are a common sight wherever you go and sponsor a highway programs are ways that corporations pay others to clean a section of highway.
